The first of the classic county
atlases was created by Henry Bridgens in 1861 from an 1860 wall
map of Berks County prepared by Lawrence Fagan. The last of the
19th century county atlases is one of Lancaster County dated 1899.
There are only 11 counties not covered by a
classic atlas: Cameron, Clinton, Elk, Forest, Fulton,
McKean, Northumberland, Pike, Potter, Sullivan, and Wyoming. Take
a look at the
County Atlas Sampler
to see what these atlases look
like. This list is based on the Library of Congress
holdings as given by LeGear, which appears to be complete for
Pennsylvania county atlases.
